Polka

Polka is a re-interpretation of a character designed by Estonian typographer Villu Toots in 1972. It was found in a book he published called “Kirjakunsti abc” (meaning “Calligraphy abc”) part of a collection of sereval type specimen. The font was described by the author like this: “Because of the contrast in the letters, it resembles an antique. Suitable for advertising and propaganda tools and for use in consumer graphics”. This alphabet is also very close to Eugene Nerdinger’s grotesque typeface and seems to be a proper revival of the German designer's font as Nerdinger version is older. Toots developed several weight for this font, taking liberties and accentuating certain elements of identity in relation to Nerdinger's versions. Polka is even bolder than Villu Toots's boldest version, keeping some irregularities within the weight distribution and proportions. The x-height is voluntary pretty big, that’s how I like to use it, with a very small leading and spacing to make the silhouette of the text very compact and bold. [eliottgrunewald.xyz]
