Werkdruck

Its rooting in rational designs means Werkdruck is decidedly drawn, not written. This typeface has the regular appearance of a Didone typeface, with vertical stress and symmetrical construction, but it comes with much less sparkling stroke contrast and bracketed serifs, true to the 19th-century saying: “Less spice, more meat.” The appearance of Werkdruck isn’t mechanic, though, with details like the organic drop terminals deviating visibly from the ruler-and-compass ideal of more stylized designs and infusing the modest character of this typeface with life. Werkdruck reminisces popular turn-of-the-century typefaces built upon the Scotch Modern genre that were cast into economic proportions to accommodate print shop requirements of the time. Unlike those predecessors, though, Werkdruck opts for more generous shapes with contemporary digital needs in mind, making each character exude confidence in modern branding while remaining legible in small sizes on high-resolution displays.
