Sharp Serif Display

Sharp Serif Display, the display counterpart to Sharp Serif takes a radical approach to optical size: combining the abstract constructivist forms of stencil designs with the high-contrast hairline forms of more standard display serif typography. Like so many other vernacular typographic styles of the past, stencil designs came from a practical need. In the digital era, the utilitarian demands of the genre (quick application of lettering onto large dimensional objects of varied surfaces and textures) is less relevant, but the forms that resulted have earned their place in the lexicon of contemporary typographic style. Sharp Serif Display is in dialogue with these charming and irreverent formulations, as well as a more contemporaneous approach to the stenciled genre as pioneered by Paul Barnes with Dala Floda, in which contrast in serif typography is simply dialed to the point at which the hairlines disappear entirely.
