Materiel

Materiel is a condensed, geometric, and brutalist influenced typeface that is the result of extrapolating a singular detail to its logical end. The angular spur of the uppercase /g letterform on the typographic cover of the AIGA Graphic Design USA: 1 annual was the sole impetus in its creation. This detail assisted in defining conceptual parameters that shaped the entirety of Materiel’s form, through an exploration of angularity, convergence, weight, and attitude. The design logic comprising Materiel is relatively nuanced and detailed considering its simplified geometric base. Materiel’s sharp, commanding shapes adhere to an underlying archetype, while subtly defying it. Its design is unplagued by the inherent limiting factors of similarly semi-modular type constructions. In the shaping of Materiel, rigid forms were made malleable and made rigid again, solely in service of its expression. Considerations of characteristically more complex genres, including refined optical adjustments, were utilized towards this singular purpose. As a result, Materiel is irreverent and raw, yet pointedly sophisticated, and unlike others of its genre, most critically, not markedly unrealized or inadvertently obtuse. [aesthetictype.com]
