Like a gawky teenager at family dinner, Gauche breaks all the rules—not because it wants to, but because it can’t help it. Its arcs are too shallow, its caps are too wide and its italic slants at a dangerous 28 degrees, while shifting its baseline to accommodate some pretty steep ascenders. We first encountered this bizarre typeface many years ago in a Nikkor Annual photobook and were immediately taken with it. Reviving it has been a long-time wish, but it was difficult to find a way of translating the complete strangeness of this grotesk into a digital font. This year, we finally found the right approach and the time to bring it back to life. Gauche consists of a roman and an (un)matching baseline-shifted italic, as well as a set of “fancy” numerals and punctuation that were part of the font in the original source—fitting Gauche’s vibe of coming to the party overdressed in someone else’s heels.
