F37 August is our humble homage to Futura, Paul Friedrich August Renner’s genre-definining geometric sans serif. F37 August is a direct descendant of Futura, one of the all-time great typefaces. Designed by the German designer, author and founder of the Master School for Germany's Printers Paul Renner in 1927, we're totally in awe of Futura here at F37. We even went as far only consulting primary sources of Renner's original cut as reference throughout the design process. Like its distinguished forebear, F37 August uses strikingly symmetrical circular geometric lines in the curves of the letterforms and varied character widths. We've also stayed true to the vertical proportions of Futura, keeping the tall ascenders and descenders that evoke the classical vertical proportions that were popular before the x-height growth spurt of the late 20th century. While the affinity to Futura is immediately apparent, F37 August does contain its own personality. Features like, an overbite on the 'g', blunt diagonals and updated numbers all lend to the F37 August's individuality. We've also developed two alternate character sets. The first is based on experimental drawings by Renner and features extreme geometry with squared off letters and sharp vertices. The second is our reimagining of the 4–8th-century Uncial alphabet through the lens of Renner's Futura. [f37foundry.com]
