Explicit is a narrow, reverse contrast geometric typeface informed by a disparate variety of past counter cultural typographic sources. The very graphic, unorthodox typographic sensibilities found in these obscure art, music, and street apparel references were the catalyst in its inception. Despite this, it wasn’t derived from any particular reference and was primarily designed from memory. Conceptually, it is defined by an intentionally unconventional, disruptive, and forward attitude, similar to the references that inspired it. Although it shares characteristics with Materiel, Explicit is foremost distinct in concept. Through this distinction, its direction was realized materially, and primarily shaped manually. Letterforms were carefully edited in a particularly reductive manner, increasing their clarity and in some cases their density. Remaining angular details were blunted or squared, providing a neutral counter to its overt expressive posture. As a result, Explicit is more than the sum of its parts or automated processes. It is the culmination of a uniquely conceptual origin, paired with intent, and supported by an acute level of detail.
